Jaden Heskey set to rejoin Sheffield Wednesday on loan as Man City clear squad

Manchester City winger Jaden Heskey is set to rejoin Sheffield Wednesday on loan for the remainder of the season, with the deal expected to be finalised before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old made 20 appearances for the Owls last term as they were relegated from the Championship, and both player and club are keen to reunite at Hillsborough. City are happy to sanction the move as part of their broader strategy of using the loan market to give their younger players consistent first-team minutes.

Heskey has two years remaining on his contract at the Etihad and has progressed through City’s academy alongside his brother Reigan, who left the club permanently earlier this summer in a move to Bundesliga side FC Köln — a deal that could reach £8 million.

The Heskey loan is the latest in a series of departures from City’s development ranks this window. The club have sold Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, Joel Ndala and Issa Kabore on permanent deals, while a number of other youngsters have headed out on temporary arrangements. City’s approach is to assess each player individually, weighing up whether a loan exit or continued progression within their age-group system best serves their development.

Separately, 18-year-old defender Stephen Mfuni has completed a loan move to Coventry City for the rest of the season. Mfuni impressed during the second half of last campaign with Watford before an injury cut his stint short, and he has now earned another Championship opportunity under Frank Lampard.

The England Under-19 international, who has one senior appearance for City, said on joining Coventry: “I feel blessed to be here, it’s exciting. These are moments you dream of and to do it with such a good team and a good squad, I’m looking forward to it. I spoke to the gaffer, he wants me to show what I normally do on the pitch, whether I’m at left-back or centre-back, and for me to keep being me and do what I do.”
