Carrick's United future hangs by a thread after 3-0 collapse leaves club one point above relegation
Manchester United are expected to sack Michael Carrick after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth left them 16th in the Premier League, one point above the drop zone, with Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe emerging as frontrunners to replace him.
Michael Carrick is facing the sack as Manchester United manager after a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday dropped the club to 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.
Goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson condemned United to a third defeat in four matches, extending their winless run to eight games across all competitions. Carrick’s side have won just two of their 12 league fixtures this season, collecting seven points from a possible 24, and have not won a top-flight match since beating Ipswich Town in August.
United’s hierarchy are now expected to fast-track the appointment of a new head coach. Insiders told Sky Sports that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club’s leadership believe a managerial change is necessary to reverse their fortunes. Former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann and ex-Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe have emerged as the leading candidates. The final decision on Carrick’s successor is expected to rest with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, who will present their recommendation to co-owner Ratcliffe.
Speaking after the final whistle, Carrick appeared downbeat and gave no assurances that he would be in charge for United’s trip to Chelsea next Saturday. Former United defender Gary Neville and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher both publicly called for Carrick to be dismissed following the result.
The club’s crisis also spilled into a family dispute involving United icon Ryan Giggs. His brother Rhodri, 49, directed an expletive-laden attack on Neville via X, accusing the former England international of failing to hold Ratcliffe accountable. “Gary Neville you’re an absolute w****r. Prime Pep couldn’t get a tune out of this lot. Call your mate Jim [Ratcliffe] out who got us into this mess further,” Rhodri wrote. “The owners are parasites and don’t have a clue.”
