Excluded from 2026 World Cup by Deschamps, Camavinga calls it « one of the biggest disappointments » of his career
Left out of the 2026 World Cup squad by Didier Deschamps, Eduardo Camavinga revealed on Sunday that this absence ranks among the greatest disappointments of his career, citing a grueling season at Real Madrid.
Eduardo Camavinga has broken his silence on his non-selection for the 2026 World Cup. The Real Madrid midfielder, regularly called up by Didier Deschamps until then, gave an interview to Téléfoot on Sunday to reflect on the episode that has marked him most since the start of his international career.
« It’s a very big disappointment because every player wants to play in this competition, » said the 23-year-old. « These are new emotions because in my life everything has happened very quickly. It’s one of the biggest disappointments I’ve had in my career. »
To get through this difficult period, the former Rennes player chose to focus on what matters most. « When you have disappointments in life, the most important thing is to take refuge with your family and in work. That’s what I did throughout the summer. I think it was important to think about myself, to disconnect but also to work. »
Camavinga’s 2024-2025 season at Real Madrid had been particularly grueling: several adductor and knee injuries, a lack of consistency and reduced playing time weighed on Deschamps’ decision. The former manager himself acknowledged the legitimacy of the player’s disappointment while justifying his choice: « He has the right to hold it against me. I understand that. Even though he had some injuries too. And the competition is also very, very strong. I’m not questioning what he is and his potential and what he’s capable of doing. »
The page appears to be turning for the Cabinda native, however. Called up as early as September by new manager Zinedine Zidane, Camavinga made his return to Clairefontaine and reportedly had a convincing training camp, suggesting a lasting reintegration into the France squad.
