Ivory Coast face Ecuador in Philadelphia as both sides chase first World Cup win
Ivory Coast make their first World Cup appearance since 2014 when they face Ecuador in a Group E opener in Philadelphia. A win for either side would place them second in the group after Germany's 7-1 demolition of Curacao.
Ivory Coast and Ecuador open their 2026 World Cup campaigns in Group E on Thursday in Philadelphia, with both sides desperate for points after Germany set the early pace by thrashing Curacao 7-1 in their own opener.
For Ivory Coast, the tournament marks a return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2014. Emerse Fae’s side have never progressed beyond the group stage in their World Cup history, and they face an Ecuador outfit against whom they have failed to win any of their previous matches against South American opposition — a record that adds an extra edge to the fixture.
A victory for either team would move them into second place in Group E, though Germany’s emphatic opening result means the group’s top spot already looks like a two-horse race.
Philadelphia Stadium is hosting its first of six World Cup matches at the venue, having previously served as a host ground for FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup last year.
The BBC broadcast team for the match is led by Mark Chapman in the presenter’s chair, with Benni McCarthy and Ellen White joining him as studio pundits. McCarthy made his name as part of José Mourinho’s Champions League-winning Porto side before Premier League spells at Blackburn and West Ham. After retiring, the former South Africa international spent two years as a strikers’ coach at Manchester United before taking on a role with the Kenya national team last year.
White enjoyed a decorated career in the Women’s Super League, winning back-to-back titles with Arsenal and a Women’s FA Cup with Manchester City, as well as featuring in England’s European Championship triumph in 2022.
On commentary, Chris Coles takes the lead role, joined by former Liverpool and England full-back Stephen Warnock as co-commentator.
