Liverpool’s summer of upheaval deepened this week as striker Alexander Isak distanced himself from events at Anfield and reports emerged that incoming Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is targeting departing defender Ibrahima Konate on a four-year deal.

Isak, 26, scored a spectacular solo goal for Sweden in their 3-1 friendly defeat to Norway on Monday but drew equal attention for his response when asked about the sacking of Arne Slot. “I’ve kind of disconnected from Liverpool now that I’m here with Sweden,” the striker said. “It’s always sad when a coach has to leave. That’s usually the first position to change when things go badly. But as I said, I don’t know much about what has happened or will happen. I wish him all the best.”

The comments, while measured, unsettled supporters who are already navigating a turbulent off-season. Liverpool paid a British record £125 million for Isak last September, and the club will be hoping next season brings a return to the form that justified that outlay.

On the defensive front, Konate’s departure was confirmed last week, with the France international leaving on a free transfer after his contract expired. According to Spanish outlet AS, Real Madrid have renewed negotiations with the 27-year-old’s representatives and are preparing a four-year offer with an option for a fifth. Mourinho, who has signed a three-year contract to return to the Bernabéu, had previously identified Konate as a target earlier in the season before Madrid cooled their interest.

Konate is set to feature for France at the FIFA World Cup 2026 this month, his third major international tournament with Les Bleus, which is likely to raise his profile further ahead of any final decision on his next club.

The managerial situation at Anfield also remains unresolved. Slot’s dismissal has left Liverpool searching for a replacement, with Andoni Iraola — who recently departed Bournemouth — named as the leading candidate. The club have already lost Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Konate this summer, making the appointment of a new head coach all the more pressing as they attempt to reshape the squad.
