Isak admits 'disconnected' feeling from Liverpool after Arne Slot's sacking
Alexander Isak has spoken about Arne Slot's departure from Liverpool while on international duty with Sweden, admitting he feels 'disconnected' from the club and expressing little surprise that the manager was dismissed following a difficult season.
Alexander Isak has described feeling ‘disconnected’ from Liverpool following the sacking of Arne Slot, speaking to reporters while away on international duty with Sweden.
Slot was dismissed from Anfield last weekend after a troubled second season in charge. Having won the Premier League title in his debut campaign, the Dutchman oversaw a sharp decline in 2025/26 despite the club spending over £300 million on attacking reinforcements — including Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz — during the summer. Liverpool ultimately dropped from champions to scraping Champions League qualification.
“I’ve kind of disconnected from Liverpool now that I’m here [with Sweden],” Isak said. “It’s always sad when a coach has to leave.”
The Swedish striker, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle United for a record £125 million last summer, endured a difficult debut season at Anfield. A broken leg sustained in December against Tottenham Hotspur limited his appearances significantly, and his goal tally fell from 27 in 2024/25 to just four this campaign.
Isak scored Sweden’s only goal in a 3-1 friendly defeat to Norway on Monday evening, converting through a solo run finished with a curling effort from a tight angle — a moment of individual quality that underlined his potential despite the disrupted year.
On Slot’s exit, Isak offered a measured but unsurprised response. “[The manager is] usually the first position to change when things go badly,” he said. “As I said, I don’t know much about what has happened or will happen. I wish him all the best.”
With Liverpool now searching for a new head coach, Andoni Iraola has been linked with the role. Isak, still only 26 and under contract at the club, is expected to be a central figure in whoever takes charge next season.
