Andoni Iraola has wasted no time in setting his standards at Liverpool, making clear to his new squad that peak physical fitness is a prerequisite for featuring under him — not an aspiration, but a baseline requirement.

The 43-year-old Spaniard was appointed Liverpool manager earlier this month on a two-year contract, succeeding Arne Slot and becoming only the second Spanish head coach in the club’s history. His arrival has generated significant excitement, largely because his high-intensity, aggressive pressing style represents a marked departure from his predecessor’s approach.

Iraola built his reputation at Bournemouth, where he guided the south coast club into European competition for the first time in their history. His methods have drawn frequent comparisons to those of former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, and he has been candid about the physical demands his system places on players.

“It is key because we try to play with a fast rhythm,” Iraola told The Guardian in 2024. “We don’t want the games to stop and you don’t have time to recover. I always say, ‘You have to ask for the ball when you’re tired.’ If you are waiting to rest before asking again for the ball or making the run into space, everyone can do this.”

“But you are a Premier League player and if you are tired, this is the moment you have to push the opposition, when they are also tired, and try to break them. To do that you have to be at your best physically.”

The message will resonate sharply with Liverpool supporters who grew frustrated with the team’s performances during the latter stages of Slot’s tenure. The then-reigning Premier League champions were widely criticised for being outworked in a number of league fixtures, with the most damning example coming in a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City last November — a game in which Liverpool covered nine kilometres less ground than their opponents.

Iraola has already begun reshaping the squad. Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Spain winger Víctor Muñoz, activating his release clause for just under £35 million after beating Newcastle United to the 22-year-old’s signature.
