Liverpool have sacked Arne Slot after a single season of decline left the club finishing fifth in the Premier League, with former Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola emerging as the strong favourite to take charge at Anfield.

Slot departs with a deeply divided legacy. His debut 2024/25 campaign delivered Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th English top-flight title, but his second season unravelled under the weight of a serious injury crisis, the failure to integrate summer signings, and a fractured relationship with departing club icon Mohamed Salah. Despite securing Champions League qualification, the absence of silverware and a perceived staleness in the team’s identity prompted the club’s hierarchy to act. Liverpool confirmed in a statement that “the process to appoint a successor is underway,” adding: “He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation.”

Iraola, who recently confirmed his departure from Bournemouth after guiding the south-coast club to an historic sixth-place finish, is priced as the 8/11 odds-on favourite. His existing relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is understood to be a significant factor in his candidacy.

Sebastian Hoeness of Stuttgart sits second in the betting at 5/1. The German coach has earned a strong reputation for player development and proactive football, qualities that align closely with the FSG ownership model, though his contract running until 2028 could complicate any approach.

Oliver Glasner, who recently left Crystal Palace following a well-regarded tenure in south London, is third at 6/1. His tactical flexibility and experience in European competition make him a credible Premier League-tested option.

Julian Nagelsmann, currently in charge of the German national team, is listed at 13/2. His high-level experience at Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig gives him a profile that would satisfy Liverpool’s ambitions, though extracting him from an international role presents its own complications.

Luis Enrique, the PSG manager, appears at 8/1. His possession-based philosophy and track record managing high-profile squads have drawn interest from bookmakers, even if a move from Paris appears a stretch at this stage.

Perhaps the most sentimental entry on the list is Jurgen Klopp, priced at 9/1 for a return to the Anfield dugout less than two years after his emotional farewell. The German stepped away from management citing the need for personal recuperation, making a swift comeback to club football widely considered unlikely despite the affection that remains between him and the club.
