Iran must beat Egypt to keep USA clash alive at 2026 World Cup
Iran sit second in Group G after draws against New Zealand and Belgium, and must beat Egypt on Saturday to have any chance of a politically charged Round of 16 meeting with the already-qualified USMNT.
Iran’s path to a politically charged showdown with the United States at the 2026 World Cup remains narrow but alive, hinging entirely on their final Group G fixture against Egypt on Saturday.
Mehdi Taremi described Iran’s tournament conditions as a “nightmare” after their opening draw against New Zealand — a result that reflected the travel and fan support restrictions placed on the national side. They followed that with another draw against Belgium, leaving them second in Group G with two points.
The USMNT, by contrast, have already secured their place in the Round of 32 after back-to-back victories over Paraguay and Australia in Group D. Mauricio Pochettino’s side return to action on Friday against Turkiye.
For a USA–Iran knockout meeting to materialise, the sequence of results required is specific. Iran must defeat Egypt to reach five points and potentially top Group G. If Belgium beat New Zealand in the same round of fixtures, the group’s top spot will be settled by a newly introduced series of tiebreaking metrics. If Belgium fail to win, Iran would top the group outright.
Topping Group G would send Iran into the Round of 32, where they would need to win again to advance to the Round of 16 — the stage at which they could face the United States.
Should both sides win their respective Round of 32 ties, the fixture that has dominated off-pitch discussion throughout the tournament would finally take place on the pitch. The window is still open, but Iran have no margin for error.
