An Iran fan was tackled and handcuffed by security at Lumen Field after invading the pitch to celebrate what he thought was a stunning extra-time winner against Egypt at the 2026 World Cup — only for VAR to rule the goal out seconds later and send the Group G match to a 1-1 draw.

Defender Shojae Khalilzadeh had fired home from close range three minutes into extra time, sparking pandemonium in the stands. The supporter, dressed in light-coloured clothing and clutching a mobile phone, leapt the advertising hoardings near the touchline and sprinted past one of nine high-visibility stewards positioned around the pitch. He evaded the first line of security before two officials gave chase and brought him down. He was restrained in handcuffs and removed from the field.

The celebrations were short-lived for everyone in green. FIFA officials determined that Khalilzadeh had strayed beyond the last Egyptian defender before scoring, and the goal was chalked off. Khalilzadeh had already been booked for his exuberant celebration — which included producing a pair of pixelated “deal with it” sunglasses — before the VAR verdict turned jubilation to despair.

The incident drew widespread attention on social media, with many questioning how a supporter was able to breach security at a tournament protected by robotic dogs, cybersecurity drones, and hundreds of personnel across all host venues. It was not the first such breach of the tournament; a separate individual had attempted to storm the field during the United States’ 4-1 win over Paraguay earlier in the competition.

“The guy rushing the field has to be upset that the goal was disallowed, especially after he was arrested,” one supporter wrote online. Another described the VAR reversal as a “gut punch,” though much of the online debate focused on the offside decision itself.

The draw left Iran with three points from three Group G games, having failed to win any of their matches. They drew 2-2 with New Zealand and held Belgium to a goalless draw before this stalemate with Egypt.
