David Beckham’s Inter Miami are on the verge of signing Casemiro, but a Major League Soccer discovery rights dispute with LA Galaxy means the club faces a £750,000 compensation bill despite the Brazilian midfielder leaving Manchester United as a free agent this summer.

Casemiro, 34, confirmed earlier this year that he would depart Old Trafford when his contract expired. While several clubs were linked with the former Real Madrid man, Inter Miami — home to Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez — have emerged as his preferred destination after a visit to see family in Florida prompted a reported change of heart.

The complication stems from LA Galaxy having registered formal interest in Casemiro before Inter Miami did. Under MLS rules, a club that places a player on its official discovery list holds priority rights to sign that player. Galaxy submitted contractual proposals to bring Casemiro to California, and because they moved first, they are now demanding £750,000 in compensation from Inter Miami to relinquish those rights.

Discovery rights disputes are not unusual in MLS. A recent precedent involved Marco Reus, whose rights were held by Charlotte FC before he completed his move from Borussia Dortmund to LA Galaxy. Charlotte initially sought £602,000 in compensation before the two clubs settled on roughly half that figure in General Allocation Money.

MLS rules state that clubs may scout and sign players not yet under contract to the league by placing them on a discovery list of up to five names at any time. Once a player is listed, any rival club wishing to sign that player must negotiate compensation with the listing club — a mechanism designed to reward scouting work but one that has drawn criticism for its complexity.

Casemiro is currently in a state of limbo while the Inter Miami and LA Galaxy dispute is resolved. Given the precedent set by the Reus case, a negotiated settlement below the initial £750,000 demand remains a possibility, though Inter Miami appear willing to absorb the cost to secure a player of his calibre.
