Inter Miami face £750,000 discovery rights bill to sign Casemiro despite free-agent status

Casemiro is set to leave Manchester United as a free agent this summer, but Inter Miami could still owe LA Galaxy £750,000 in compensation due to an MLS discovery rights dispute triggered after Galaxy registered interest in the Brazilian midfielder first.

Inter Miami may be forced to pay LA Galaxy £750,000 in compensation to sign Casemiro this summer, even though the Brazilian midfielder will leave Manchester United as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Casemiro, 34, announced earlier this year that he would depart Old Trafford at the end of his deal. While several clubs have been linked with the veteran midfielder, a move to David Beckham’s Inter Miami — where he would join Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez — appears all but confirmed.

The complication stems from MLS’s discovery rights system. LA Galaxy registered an official interest in Casemiro before Inter Miami did, giving them a prior claim under league rules. GOAL reports that Casemiro and his representatives held talks with Galaxy and received contractual offers before a family visit to Miami shifted his preference toward the Florida club. Galaxy are now calling for £750,000 in compensation before the transfer can proceed, leaving Casemiro in theoretical limbo until the dispute is resolved.

Discovery rights conflicts are not uncommon in MLS. A recent comparable case involved Marco Reus, whose rights were held by Charlotte FC before he completed a move from Borussia Dortmund to LA Galaxy. Charlotte initially sought £602,000 in compensation but ultimately settled for half that figure in General Allocation Money — a precedent that may inform negotiations between Galaxy and Inter Miami.

Under MLS rules, clubs can place up to five players on a discovery list at any time and may sign an unlimited number of players through that mechanism. Once a player is on a club’s discovery list, any rival club wishing to sign that player must first negotiate a compensation settlement with the club holding the rights.

The size of any eventual settlement between Galaxy and Inter Miami remains unclear, though the Reus precedent suggests the final figure could fall below the initial £750,000 demand. What is not in doubt is that Inter Miami’s pursuit of Casemiro carries a financial cost that his free-agent status alone cannot eliminate.
