Andrés Iniesta has moved into coaching, signing with Gulf United — a second-tier club in the United Arab Emirates — in his first managerial role since retiring from playing in 2024. The club confirmed the appointment on Monday, noting that Iniesta currently holds a coaching licence for the second tier and is in the process of obtaining his Pro Coaching Licence.

Iniesta, who ended his playing career with Emirates Club FC, said Gulf United’s focus on youth development was central to his decision. “Gulf United FC feels like the perfect place to begin this new chapter,” he said. “Football has given me everything, and now I want to give something back through coaching, through learning and through daily work with young players who have the hunger and the talent to go far.”

The Spaniard outlined a patient, philosophy-driven approach to the role. “I believe in developing footballers the right way: with patience, with a clear idea of how the game should be played and with genuine care for each individual. Gulf United shares that philosophy, and that is why I am here.”

Iniesta is widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation. After progressing through Barcelona’s La Masia academy, he went on to make 674 appearances for the club, winning La Liga nine times and the Champions League on four occasions.

On the international stage, he was instrumental in Spain’s unprecedented run of three consecutive major tournament victories — Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012. His most iconic moment came in the 2010 World Cup final in Johannesburg, where he scored the extra-time winner against the Netherlands to give Spain their first world title.

After leaving Barcelona, Iniesta spent several seasons with Japanese club Vissel Kobe before his final stint with Emirates Club FC. His return to football in a coaching capacity comes roughly two years after he hung up his boots.
