Ibrahimovic's dig at absent Lalas leaves Thierry Henry speechless on World Cup panel
Zlatan Ibrahimovic quipped 'America, you're welcome' when told Alexi Lalas had left the FOX Sports studio for Seattle, prompting a jaw-drop from fellow analyst Thierry Henry. The remark is the latest flashpoint in a tense on-air dynamic between the two pundits.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic raised eyebrows once again on the FOX Sports World Cup 2026 panel, delivering a pointed one-liner at the expense of colleague Alexi Lalas that left Thierry Henry visibly stunned.
With Lalas having travelled to Seattle to cover the United States’ second group-stage fixture against Australia, presenter Rebecca Lowe informed viewers that her co-host had “left us.” Ibrahimovic’s immediate response — “America, you’re welcome” — drew a wide-eyed, jaw-dropping reaction from Henry, who stared directly at the camera in disbelief.
The quip is the latest chapter in what has become the most talked-about subplot of the tournament’s broadcast coverage. Tensions between Ibrahimovic and Lalas have been simmering since the opening days of the competition, with the former Sweden striker labelling his American counterpart “ignorant” during a debate about the French national team following France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal.
That exchange was sparked when Lalas suggested France had been arrogant during the first half of the match, before Kylian Mbappe inspired a commanding second-half display. “The reality is, if they are arrogant, it’s because they can do things like that,” Lalas argued. Ibrahimovic, who forged much of his legacy at Paris Saint-Germain, pushed back sharply: “It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence. Ignorant people will say it’s arrogance, intelligent people it’s confidence.” Henry responded by staring wide-eyed into the camera as Lowe attempted to steer the conversation forward.
The friction between the two has not been limited to verbal sparring. Footage also emerged of Ibrahimovic and Henry keeping a football up in the stadium while appearing to blank Lalas entirely, further fuelling speculation that the chemistry between the pundits is strained at best.
Lalas, a former USMNT defender, joined Ibrahimovic, Henry and Lowe as part of FOX Sports’ high-profile analyst lineup for the tournament. The broadcaster holds exclusive English-language rights to all 104 World Cup fixtures in the United States. Lalas had already attracted attention earlier in the coverage after using expletives on air, but it is his uncomfortable exchanges with Ibrahimovic that have dominated the conversation around the studio setup.
With the tournament still in its early stages, there is plenty of time for the dynamic between the two to either thaw or escalate further.
