Ibrahimović singles out Kane's defensive block as England's finest moment in Croatia rout

Harry Kane scored twice as England beat Croatia 4-2, but it was his last-gasp shot block in the 94th minute that drew the loudest praise from analyst Zlatan Ibrahimović, who called it the mark of a winner.

Harry Kane scored twice and made a crucial defensive block as England defeated Croatia 4-2 on Wednesday, with former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimović declaring the stoppage-time intervention — not either goal — as Kane’s defining moment of the match.

With Croatia threatening in the 94th minute, Kane threw himself in front of a shot just yards from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to preserve the result. For Ibrahimović, that selfless act said more about the England captain than his brace.

“He scored two goals, but my favourite was when he blocked the shot in his own area,” Ibrahimović said. “When you see a top player defend like he does, the sacrifice, he wants something, he wants to win. He’s prepared to do the things that a star would not do normally.”

The performance carried significant statistical weight too. Kane’s two-goal haul drew him level with Gary Lineker as England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer on 10 goals, and made him only the second England player to score at three separate World Cup tournaments. Competing in his third World Cup as captain, Kane has now scored 81 goals in 114 appearances for the Three Lions.

His club form underlines the consistency. In 31 appearances for Bayern Munich this season, Kane registered 36 goals and five assists — numbers that reflect not just his finishing but the broader game that Ibrahimović highlighted. Kane’s habit of dropping into midfield and contributing defensively has long been a feature of his play, and Wednesday’s block brought that dimension into sharp relief on the international stage.

England’s dominant victory over Croatia set an early marker in Group L, with Kane and the Three Lions next facing Ghana on 23 June at Boston Stadium as they target a place in the Round of 32.
