Zlatan Ibrahimovic publicly rebuked fellow FOX Sports pundit Alexi Lalas during live coverage of France’s 3-1 World Cup victory over Senegal at New York/New Jersey Stadium on Tuesday, telling viewers that only ‘ignorant people’ would describe France’s performance as arrogant rather than confident.

The flashpoint came after Lalas raised the question of whether France had displayed arrogance during a first half in which Senegal had arguably looked the more threatening side. Kylian Mbappe ultimately took the game by the scruff of the neck, opening the scoring from a Michael Olise assist before Bradley Barcola doubled the lead. Senegal pulled one back late on, but Mbappe netted his second to restore the two-goal cushion and seal the win.

As Lalas attempted to walk back his arrogance framing, Ibrahimovic cut in sharply. “It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence,” the former Sweden striker said. “Ignorant people will say it’s arrogance, intelligent people it’s confidence.” Thierry Henry, seated alongside the pair, responded to the exchange by staring wide-eyed into the camera, doing little to ease the tension in the studio.

The incident is not an isolated one. After the United States defeated Paraguay, Ibrahimovic criticised Lalas for heaping excessive pressure on the USMNT squad, with presenter Rebecca Lowe visibly intervening to move the broadcast along as the two continued to argue. Lalas also went viral earlier in the tournament after inadvertently uttering a swear word on air.

Ibrahimovic and Henry joined FOX Sports’ World Cup coverage this summer, with the two former strikers pairing up alongside the American broadcaster’s permanent punditry team. The dynamic between Ibrahimovic’s blunt style and Lalas’s more established presence at the network has generated as much attention as some of the football itself.

FOX Sports has leaned into Ibrahimovic’s candour — the network recently subjected him to a lie detector test in which he was asked whether he respected his fellow pundits’ opinions. The result of that particular exchange was not flattering.
