Ibrahim Mbaye could start against Norway, Pape Thiaw hesitates to change his attack
After Senegal's defeat to France (1-3), PSG prospect Ibrahim Mbaye is being called for a starting spot in the decisive match against Norway. Head coach Pape Thiaw remains attached to his usual attacking trio.
Senegal faces Norway under pressure after a 1-3 defeat to France that leaves the Lions of Teranga in a precarious position in the race for the best third-place finishes. Another loss would seriously hurt their qualification hopes.
The question stirring the Senegal camp is clear: should Ibrahim Mbaye start? The 18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain winger scored a notable goal coming off the bench against France, and part of the national team’s entourage is now calling for his inclusion in the starting eleven. So far confined to a super-sub role — already used that way at the last Africa Cup of Nations — the young Parisian could this time start on the right according to L’Équipe. Iliman Ndiaye represents another attacking option, possibly for use during the match.
Pape Thiaw, meanwhile, did not appear convinced of the need to reshape his attack. At a press conference, the head coach defended his choices: “I don’t think the attack that started was bad, I think it’s just a lack of efficiency. And I prefer players who create chances over those who don’t. When my team creates chances, I think that’s something beneficial. And when we have success… Let’s hope we have it tomorrow, because it’s an important match.”
If the coach stays true to his line, Nicolas Jackson should occupy the center-forward position, flanked by Sadio Mané and Ismaila Sarr. But the door is not completely closed for Mbaye, whose impact against France has apparently weighed on the debate.
