Hoddle questions Tuchel's decision to leave Wharton out of England's World Cup squad

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle has questioned Thomas Tuchel's decision to omit Adam Wharton from the World Cup squad, arguing the Crystal Palace midfielder demonstrated exactly why he should be on the plane with a standout display in Palace's 1-0 Conference League final victory over Rayo Vallecano.

Glenn Hoddle has publicly questioned Thomas Tuchel’s decision to leave Adam Wharton out of England’s World Cup squad, saying he “raised an eyebrow” when the Crystal Palace midfielder’s name was absent — a reaction sharpened by Wharton’s performance in Palace’s 1-0 Conference League final win over Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig.

The 22-year-old was one of Palace’s standout players as the Eagles claimed their first European trophy, his composed, forward-thinking display coming just days after Tuchel confirmed he would not be travelling to the World Cup this summer.

“I was a little bit surprised, yeah,” Hoddle said. “I think he suits three in midfield because he doesn’t get around the pitch that quickly so that might be a burden against him, but certainly for me I love the way he looks forward and passes. He can hit the killer balls, those balls that take the whole defence out with one pass. I’m not sure England have got many in the deep-lying positions who can do that on a consistent level.”

Hoddle also questioned the inclusion of Jordan Henderson, suggesting the veteran midfielder’s role could be fulfilled off the pitch. “I understand why the manager has taken Jordan Henderson but if you want him to do that type of job just take him as a coach. There was a spot there for Adam Wharton.”

Of Wharton’s display in the final, Hoddle was unequivocal: “He was different class tonight. He settled into the game and just showed everyone what he does — he got on the ball and passed and created. Palace weren’t at their best but he was doing all the right things and exactly what he does week in, week out. It’s a big blow not to be on the plane to the World Cup but he’s finished the season on a real high.”

Wharton himself addressed the omission with notable composure after the final whistle. “That’s just part of football. It was never a guarantee I was going to go. I knew that,” he said. “When he called me, he just told me I wasn’t there. He said it was close. But yeah, that’s football. I’m not going to sit here and cry about it.”

The midfielder, who turns 23 this year, remained measured about his long-term international prospects. “Hopefully there’s other tournaments and World Cups that I can go to in the future. I was just focused on Palace and coming here and getting the win, which we have done.”
