Kai Havertz and Folarin Balogun have emerged as the early leaders in the race for the World Cup 2026 golden boot, each scoring twice in their respective opening-round fixtures. Havertz’s brace came in Germany’s win over Curacao, while Balogun found the net twice for the United States.

Sweden’s Yasin Ayari is also level on two goals, making it a three-way tie at the summit of the standings. Behind them, Alexander Isak and Germany’s Denis Undav sit fourth on one goal apiece, with Isak’s two assists giving him the edge in the tiebreaker rankings.

The 2026 tournament is the first to feature 48 teams, introducing an additional round of 32 that gives the world’s leading strikers one more opportunity to build their goal tallies before the knockout stages begin in earnest.

The golden boot tiebreaker system works as follows: if players are level on goals, assists are counted next; if still tied, minutes played and goals-per-minute ratio decide the ranking.

Among the pre-tournament favourites, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé — the two most recent golden boot winners — are yet to feature in the standings. Mbappé, the France captain, scored eight goals in 2022 including a hat-trick in the final, while Kane struck six for England in 2018. Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal are also widely regarded as leading contenders as the competition progresses.
