Lewis Hall is ready to leave Newcastle United following a reported falling out with manager Eddie Howe, with Manchester United identified as a potential destination for the 21-year-old left-back.

According to The Sun, Hall grew frustrated with Howe in the final weeks of the season after being switched to right-back shortly before England head coach Thomas Tuchel named his World Cup squad. Hall, who had flourished at St James’ Park for much of the campaign, believed the positional change and reduced game time damaged his chances of earning a call-up — and he reportedly blames Howe for that.

The former Chelsea academy product was substituted at half-time during Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth in April and then dropped to the bench for the subsequent fixtures against Arsenal and Brighton. The Sun reports that Hall was involved in a row with Howe, with some at the club fearing their working relationship has irreparably broken down.

Newcastle have denied any falling out between the pair. Hall remains under contract at St James’ Park until 2029, and the club are understood to be reluctant to sell, particularly after a difficult season. Howe previously stated his wish for players with international ambitions to be given every opportunity to represent their countries, saying: “My wish is for all the players who want to go, to go. The World Cup and representing their countries is a huge moment for them so my first thought is to them.”

Manchester United are said to be monitoring the situation, with the club in the market for a long-term left-back option. Luke Shaw is out of contract at Old Trafford next year, making the position a priority area for the summer.

Newcastle’s transfer landscape has already shifted significantly this window. The club sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £70 million, which has eased some of the financial pressure created by their PSR obligations. Despite that, the Magpies are keen to hold on to key assets including Hall, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimarães — all of whom have attracted interest from rival clubs.

The club’s experience with Alexander Isak last summer serves as a cautionary tale. The Swedish striker made his desire to join Liverpool public, and the drawn-out saga affected Newcastle’s ability to plan and recruit effectively, with a tangible impact on their season.
