Gvardiol says 'we'll see' on Manchester City future after Guardiola's departure

Josko Gvardiol has stopped short of committing his long-term future to Manchester City, saying he will reassess after the World Cup. The Croatian defender, contracted until 2028, made 25 appearances in Guardiola's final season after a significant mid-season injury.

Josko Gvardiol has left the door open on his Manchester City future, telling reporters he is happy at the club for now but will take stock after this summer’s World Cup — a caveat that arrives as City search for a successor to Pep Guardiola.

The 24-year-old Croatian acknowledged the speculation surrounding his future but was initially measured in his response. “We’ve all seen various rumours coming from every direction. I’m happy at Man City, I have everything I need,” Gvardiol said. It was his follow-up that will concern supporters: “Before the injury I played every match, almost full minutes. After the World Cup, we’ll see.”

Gvardiol has made 122 appearances for City since joining in 2023, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most highly-rated defenders. His 2025/26 campaign, however, was disrupted by a significant mid-season injury that limited him to 18 Premier League appearances and 25 outings across all competitions — Guardiola’s final season in charge.

Guardiola officially ended his trophy-laden 10-year tenure at the Etihad this summer, leaving the club in the process of identifying a new manager capable of steering them into a new era. Gvardiol’s conditional language suggests the identity of that incoming coach could weigh on any decision he makes about his future.

The defender is contracted to Manchester City until the summer of 2028, meaning the club hold significant leverage. But his refusal to offer an unconditional commitment adds another layer of uncertainty to a squad already navigating a significant period of transition. Losing a player of Gvardiol’s calibre would present an early and unwelcome challenge for whoever takes the dugout at the Etihad.
