Mason Greenwood’s future at Marseille may be resolved this summer, with Fenerbahce’s interest in the former Manchester United forward tied to the outcome of the Turkish club’s presidential election — a deal that could return around £19m to Old Trafford.

Aziz Yildirim was voted back as Fenerbahce president on Sunday after an eight-year absence, succeeding the man who had been among the most vocal advocates for signing Greenwood. His rival for the post, Hakan Safi, had gone as far as claiming a four-year contract had already been agreed with the 23-year-old, contingent on Safi winning the vote. Reports in recent weeks had also suggested Yildirim himself supported the move, though his commitment to pursuing it is not guaranteed.

The proposed fee stands at £47.5m. A 40 per cent sell-on clause written into Greenwood’s Marseille contract would entitle United to approximately £19m of that sum — a significant windfall for a player who left Old Trafford permanently in 2024.

A move to Istanbul would also reunite Greenwood with Fred, the Brazilian midfielder who joined Fenerbahce from United in 2023. The pair shared the pitch on 92 occasions across four seasons at Old Trafford, winning 49 of those matches and losing just 17, according to Transfermarkt. Only Harry Maguire (107 games) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (101) have featured alongside Greenwood more often in his career.

Fred, now 33, has been a consistent presence in Istanbul, making 125 appearances in three seasons — averaging more than 40 games per campaign. He helped the club win the Turkish Super Cup last year, though Fenerbahce have finished as Super Lig runners-up for five consecutive seasons, with Galatasaray dominating the domestic title race. Returning the club to league glory is expected to be Yildirim’s primary objective following his return to power.

Whether Greenwood features in those plans remains to be seen. The presidency has changed hands, but the transfer question has not yet been answered.
