Greenwood persona non grata in Premier League, Tottenham shuts door on €50m deal

Tottenham will not pursue Mason Greenwood this summer, despite Roberto De Zerbi's interest in his former Olympique de Marseille player. The English striker, valued at €50 million, remains unwelcome in the Premier League due to domestic violence allegations that marked his career in 2022.

Tottenham will make no offer for Mason Greenwood, according to the Daily Mail. The London club, which is working on its summer transfer market after narrowly avoiding relegation to the Championship, rules out any reunion between the striker and his manager Roberto De Zerbi, who had coached him at Olympique de Marseille.

The reason is clear: Greenwood remains persona non grata in the Premier League. In January 2022, while playing for Manchester United and seemingly destined for a bright future, the English international was accused of domestic violence. The complaint filed by his partner was eventually withdrawn, but the player lost all credibility in his country. He was subsequently loaned to Spain before joining Marseille, where he established himself as one of the club’s major attacking assets.

More than four years after these events, the situation has not changed across the Atlantic. Marseille, which needs liquidity after narrowly securing its ticket for next season’s Ligue Europa, is asking for approximately €50 million for the 24-year-old striker. An amount that Tottenham refuses to consider, and that AS Rome — another interested club — appears unable to match.

Marseille’s new sporting director, Grégory Lorenzi, nevertheless confirmed that the club would remain attentive to opportunities: “If an opportunity presents itself, we will of course have to consider it.” Greenwood’s future will therefore likely depend on a buyer outside the Premier League willing to meet Marseille’s financial demands.
