Mason Greenwood is closing in on a permanent move to Roma, with Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport reporting that the 24-year-old’s wages have already been agreed at £3.9 million annually plus bonuses — a figure that will rise the longer he remains at the club. Manchester United, who sold Greenwood to Marseille in 2024, stand to benefit from a 40% sell-on clause inserted into that original deal.

Greenwood had been a consistent performer for Marseille, scoring 48 goals and contributing 17 assists across 81 appearances, but his desire to move on hardened after the French club missed out on European football last season. Roma have identified the former United winger as a priority target this summer.

Elsewhere, Wayne Rooney has publicly questioned England manager Thomas Tuchel’s decision to call up Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah as a replacement for the injured Tino Livramento, rather than turning to Luke Shaw. The Newcastle defender withdrew from the World Cup squad with a calf problem, opening a spot in Tuchel’s group.

Rooney, speaking on his BBC Sport podcast, described the call as “strange,” pointing to Shaw’s record of starting every Premier League game for United last season — a campaign that ended with the club securing Champions League qualification. Shaw also carries considerable international experience, having earned 34 caps and featured at two World Cups and two European Championships.

Chalobah, by contrast, will be making his first World Cup appearance as a result of the call-up — a debut on the biggest stage that Rooney clearly did not anticipate. Tuchel’s preference for the Chelsea defender over the more experienced Shaw has drawn scrutiny at a tournament where squad selection decisions face intense examination.

United manager Michael Carrick, meanwhile, is preparing for the return of his non-World Cup players as he looks to build momentum ahead of his first full season as permanent manager. Twelve United players are representing their countries across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
