Greenwood agrees Roma move as Man Utd face rival bid for Summerville
Mason Greenwood has reportedly agreed personal terms on a permanent move to Roma after a 26-goal season at Marseille. The deal carries a financial sting for Manchester United, who hold a 40 per cent sell-on clause from his £26m departure in 2024.
Mason Greenwood has agreed personal terms on a permanent move to AS Roma, according to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, with the 24-year-old set to leave Marseille after one standout season in Ligue 1.
The former Manchester United winger scored 26 goals and registered 11 assists in 45 appearances for Marseille this season, but with the club missing out on European qualification, Greenwood is understood to be eager for a fresh challenge in Serie A. Roma have identified him as a priority signing and expect him to work under head coach Gian Piero Gasperini next season.
Greenwood’s reported salary will start at £3.9 million per year, rising incrementally, with performance-related bonuses said to be comfortably within reach. United stand to benefit financially from the deal: the club negotiated a 40 per cent sell-on clause when they sold Greenwood to Marseille for £26 million in 2024, meaning a significant portion of any profit on his next transfer fee would flow back to Old Trafford.
The Roma connection does not end there. The Italian club are also pursuing West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville, a player United themselves have been monitoring. The Athletic reports that United have already made an opening enquiry to West Ham about the Dutchman’s availability, and Roma’s interest could push his valuation higher.
Summerville, 24, is currently representing the Netherlands at the World Cup, and his performances there are adding further to his profile. West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League means the club may be willing to sell, with the winger — contracted until June 2029 — considered one of their most saleable assets. A fee of around £50 million has been cited.
United view Summerville as a versatile attacking option, though strengthening the midfield remains the club’s primary focus this summer. West Ham teammate Mateus Fernandes is also listed among United’s targets as they look to reshape the squad ahead of next season.
