Greenwood agrees Roma move as Man United's Summerville pursuit faces Italian rival
Mason Greenwood has reportedly agreed personal terms with Roma on a permanent transfer from Marseille, while the Serie A club are also chasing West Ham's Crysencio Summerville — a target Manchester United have already approached.
Mason Greenwood has agreed personal terms with Roma on a permanent transfer, according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, with the former Manchester United winger set to play under Gian Piero Gasperini next season.
Greenwood, 24, produced one of the standout individual seasons in Ligue 1 this year, scoring 26 goals and registering 11 assists in 45 appearances for Marseille. Despite that form, the French club’s failure to qualify for European football has prompted the Englishman to seek a move, with Roma identifying him as a key summer target.
His salary at the Stadio Olimpico is reported to start at £3.9 million per year plus bonuses, with incremental increases built into the deal. Several of those performance-related bonuses are said to be readily attainable based on standard output targets.
Manchester United stand to benefit financially from the transfer. The club negotiated a 40 per cent sell-on clause when they sold Greenwood to Marseille for £26 million in 2024, meaning they would receive a significant cut of any profit Roma pay above that original fee.
The Roma connection to Old Trafford does not end there. The Italian side are also reportedly pursuing Crysencio Summerville, a player United have already made an opening enquiry about. The Athletic reports that United are among several clubs monitoring the West Ham winger following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.
Summerville, also 24, is currently representing the Netherlands at the World Cup, and his performances there are expected to further inflate his market value. West Ham are believed to be open to selling him for around £50 million given their relegation, and he remains under contract until June 2029.
Roma’s entry into the race adds competitive pressure on United at a time when the club’s primary transfer focus is understood to be midfield reinforcement. Summerville’s versatility has made him an attractive secondary option for the wing, and fellow West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes is also said to be on United’s radar.
