Greenwood agrees personal terms with Fenerbahce, cutting United's sell-on windfall

Mason Greenwood has agreed personal terms with Fenerbahce, according to L'Equipe, with the Turkish club unwilling to meet Marseille's €50m asking price. Manchester United hold a 40 percent sell-on clause, meaning any shortfall in the fee directly reduces their cut.

Mason Greenwood has agreed personal terms with Fenerbahce, L’Equipe reports, bringing the 23-year-old closer to a move away from Marseille and complicating Manchester United’s hopes of maximising the sell-on clause they retained when they sold him to the Ligue 1 club.

While Marseille are holding out for €50m this summer, Fenerbahce are unwilling to go beyond €30m plus add-ons — a gap that matters significantly to United. The Old Trafford club inserted a 40 percent sell-on clause into the original sale, meaning the final agreed fee will determine how much they receive. The lower the transfer fee, the smaller United’s return.

There is still a chance the deal takes a different shape. Reports from Italy suggest AS Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini views Greenwood as the ideal wide forward for his 3-4-3 system, though Roma are currently focused on offloading players to balance their books ahead of the June 30 financial deadline, which limits their ability to move quickly.

Greenwood, who has not featured for United since January 2022, enjoyed a productive debut season in France, scoring 26 goals in 44 appearances for Marseille. Despite those numbers, his campaign was not without controversy. After Marseille’s 3-0 defeat to Nantes last month, French football pundit and Marseille legend Christophe Dugarry launched a stinging public attack on the forward.

“You are the leader of this team, everyone depends on you,” Dugarry said. “When you’re not there, everyone feels your absence. And what do you give back after all those sacrifices? This? You’re a disgrace, get out. That’s the money you’ll make for the club, but no one will cry for you. What he did against Nantes is shameful. I saw him walking around. At times I just looked at him and he was pretending. He doesn’t care.”

Greenwood had previously indicated a desire to stay at Marseille, where his contract runs until June 2029, but the agreement of personal terms with Fenerbahce signals that his time in France is likely coming to an end. United will be monitoring the situation closely as the gap between Marseille’s valuation and Fenerbahce’s offer remains unresolved.
