Anthony Gordon has lifted the lid on his £70m move from Newcastle United to Barcelona, revealing that Marcus Rashford offered him personal advice on settling into life at Camp Nou despite the pair competing for the same position in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

Rashford spent the 2025-26 season on loan at the Catalan club and, rather than viewing Gordon’s arrival as a threat, the Manchester United forward acted as an informal guide — sharing details about the squad’s team spirit, the city, and where to live.

“He was just telling me how good the lads are there, the team spirit that they have, which I heard already from the people in Barça. So I’m really looking forward to joining up with them. He was also telling me about the city, places to live. He’s a lovely guy, very caring. So he was just giving me a bit of information,” Gordon told talkSPORT.

The 29-year-old Rashford’s generosity is notable given that his own future at Barcelona remains uncertain following the loan spell, and Gordon’s arrival at the club effectively signals the end of that chapter for the United academy graduate.

For Gordon, the transfer is the realisation of a long-held ambition — but he is clear it is only the starting point. The winger, who swapped St James’ Park for Catalonia shortly before joining up with England’s World Cup preparations, insists the fee and the destination are not the destination themselves.

“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind of two weeks, but the best two weeks I’ve ever had for me and my family,” Gordon said. “I’m not satisfied at all to just play for Barcelona. I want to win everything. This is where my career begins in my mind. So I’m at the stage I always said I was going to be. Now I need to get to the next level again.”

The £70m investment represents a significant outlay for a Barcelona side that continues to manage complex financial constraints, and it underlines Hansi Flick’s confidence in the England winger as a long-term fixture at the club.

Despite the warm words between the two players, the competition between them for England’s left-wing berth remains unresolved. Rashford has been handed the No.11 shirt for the tournament, while Gordon has been assigned No.18 — a detail that has fuelled speculation about the respective roles Tuchel has in mind for each player heading into the competition.
