Giresse predicts Senegal qualification despite France defeat
After losing 3-1 to France in their World Cup 2026 opener, the Lions of Teranga face Norway on June 22 at East Rutherford. Former coach Alain Giresse remains convinced that Senegal will advance from the group stage.
Defeated 3-1 by France in their first World Cup 2026 match, Senegal finds itself already under pressure before facing Norway on June 22 at East Rutherford. The Lions of Teranga must respond emphatically against a Norwegian side in full flow after their 4-1 victory over Iraq.
Following the defeat to the Blues, several decisions by coach Pape Thiaw fueled debate in the Senegalese press. The starting selection of Kalidou Koulibaly, absent from the pitch since April 8 due to a thigh injury, particularly raised questions about his fitness level.
For this crucial second match, Alain Giresse, former Senegal coach, believes Pape Thiaw has the resources to adjust his setup. “It’s possible, because he has real depth on the bench. He will take into account the fitness of his players but also the profile of the opponent,” analyzes the French coach. He notably points out that several offensive options exist with Ibrahim Mbaye, Iliman Ndiaye and Bamba Dieng, all brought on as substitutes against France.
Despite this first setback, the former Girondins de Bordeaux midfielder displays unwavering confidence in the Lions of Teranga’s chances of qualification. “Since the draw, I’ve been saying that France, Norway and Senegal will advance,” he asserts, convinced that Senegal has the means to bounce back in a particularly competitive group.
