Gignac wants to extend with Tigres but still awaits response from club
Out of contract with Tigres UANL, André-Pierre Gignac has requested a one-year extension along with a management position, but the Mexican club has yet to make any proposal ten days before the season resumes.
André-Pierre Gignac finds himself in an uncomfortable contractual void: ten days before the season resumes, Tigres UANL’s all-time leading goalscorer has received no extension proposal from the club’s management.
The 40-year-old striker has nonetheless laid his cards on the table. According to L’Équipe, he has formally requested a one-year extension, accompanied by a clause opening the door to a management position within the club’s organizational structure. A clear approach to which Mauricio Doehner, the Tigres’ chief executive, has yet to respond.
The club’s silence is all the more striking given that Gignac has built legendary status there since his arrival from Olympique de Marseille in 2015. Over ten seasons, he has scored 222 goals in 445 matches, establishing himself as the central figure of Mexican football. The club has moreover done nothing to deny rumors of an imminent retirement, while never officially confirming the end of their shared adventure.
If Tigres remained silent, Gignac would not be without options. Boca Juniors in Argentina has reportedly opened its doors to him, and several Mexican clubs could also offer him an honorable exit. But it is in Monterrey that the former Lorient player wishes to end his career, at least for one more season.
Time is ticking. The season resumes soon and Gignac is still waiting.
