Giggs tells Rashford to sprint back and earn fans' trust after United return

Ryan Giggs has delivered a direct message to Marcus Rashford: sprint back, do the dirty work, and the Old Trafford crowd will forgive almost everything else. The United legend spoke out as Rashford returns to the club under manager Michael Carrick following loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, after a permanent move to the Spanish club fell through.

Appearing on Rio Ferdinand Presents: The Debrief, Giggs was unambiguous about what Rashford needs to do to rebuild his relationship with supporters. “Not all the time, obviously, but they won’t forgive you for not tracking back,” Giggs said. “They just won’t. I love Marcus and I want him to do well.”

Giggs acknowledged uncertainty about whether the return was the right move, citing the pressure that tends to follow Rashford. “I wasn’t sure if it was right for him to come back because of the whole hype, it always seems to be around Marcus, and it’s a lot of pressure for him. But he’s got the talent. Just do that — tracking back — for a season. You will be a superstar.”

The former winger, who knows better than most what United fans demand from a wide player, stressed that the moments fans remember are not always the flashy ones. “You haven’t touched the ball for 10 minutes and you track back and win a tackle. It’s huge,” he said. “There’s no doubt in his ability. Assists and goals are really important. But also don’t forget that dirty work where you have to sprint back, not jog back, sprint back and win the ball back.”

Giggs also recalled the moment Rashford first caught the coaching staff’s eye under Louis van Gaal in 2015. He described watching the then-teenager in a small-sided reserve game, where Rashford scored twice in quick succession — one with each foot. “It was like, ‘what have we just seen?’” Giggs said.

He added that Van Gaal’s response was characteristically blunt: “Louis turns to me and went, ‘you will tell him he is in my team’, and just walked off.” Rashford went on to score twice on his debut and has been a central — if increasingly complicated — figure at the club ever since.

Rashford’s return comes after a falling-out with former manager Ruben Amorim, and Carrick now faces the task of reintegrating one of English football’s most talented — and most scrutinised — forwards.
