Gibbs-White backs England to win World Cup despite his own omission from Tuchel's squad
Morgan Gibbs-White has expressed disappointment at being left out of England's World Cup squad by Thomas Tuchel, despite scoring 15 Premier League goals for Nottingham Forest this season. The 26-year-old midfielder says he could not have done more and wishes the selected players well.
Morgan Gibbs-White says he was “really disappointed” to miss England’s World Cup squad, but insists he has no regrets about his own performances after a strong end to the Premier League season with Nottingham Forest.
The 26-year-old midfielder, who has six senior caps, was among those cut by manager Thomas Tuchel last week. Gibbs-White finished the campaign with 15 league goals — including a strike in Forest’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on the final day — yet still found himself overlooked alongside higher-profile absentees Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, whose domestic seasons were considerably less productive.
“I was disappointed, really disappointed, but I was happy with the way I performed towards the end of the season,” Gibbs-White said. “I knew in myself I couldn’t do any more. Any kid’s dream growing up is to play at a World Cup or make a World Cup squad list.”
Despite his personal frustration, Gibbs-White was generous in his assessment of the group Tuchel has selected, expressing genuine belief that England can go all the way in the tournament.
“I’m wishing all the boys all the luck, all the best wishes, because this group, they are genuinely an incredible group of players,” he said. “They’ve got everything they need to win it.”
England open their World Cup campaign against Croatia on 17 June.
