Germany Scrapes Through in Extra Time, Ivory Coast Denounces Lack of Fair Play
Germany reversed a 1-0 deficit to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in extra time on Saturday night in Toronto to qualify for the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. The aftermath was marked by a heated altercation between the two managers and accusations of unsporting conduct.
Germany scraped through to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup by overturning Ivory Coast 2-1 in extra time on Saturday night in Toronto. The Elephants, who had been leading, collapsed in the dying moments in what became a bitter evening both on and off the pitch.
The triggering incident occurred in the 80th minute. Injured, Wilfried Singo knocked the ball out of play in line with the unspoken conventions of the game. But Nathaniel Brown, on the throw-in that followed, did not return the ball to the Ivorians. The gesture, perceived as a violation of fair play, immediately inflamed both benches.
At his press conference, Ivory Coast manager Emerse Faé did not mince words: “We take such nations as examples to develop further, but I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of fair play displayed by this German team.” He then elaborated on Brown’s conduct: “I simply told him to remain humble. From a great nation like Germany, we would have expected a bit more fair play when Singo knocked the ball out of bounds because he was injured. We would have liked them to return it to us.”
The tension did not ease at the final whistle. Faé and his counterpart Julian Nagelsmann had a heated exchange after the match. The Ivory Coast manager reportedly took issue with Nagelsmann celebrating the victory with his players before even greeting him. At his press conference, Faé chose to make no public statement about that exchange.
For Germany, the result is what matters: the Mannschaft secured their ticket to the next round. For Ivory Coast, elimination is all the more cruel as it was decided in the final seconds, after holding their own against one of the tournament’s most solid teams.
