Germany open World Cup 2026 against debutants Curacao with Wirtz and Kimmich leading the charge
Germany begin their World Cup 2026 campaign in Texas against Curacao, who qualified for their first-ever tournament after eliminating Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda. Julian Nagelsmann's side are heavy favourites, though Curacao's attackers Sontje Hansen and Tahith Chong offer a genuine threat.
Germany face first-time World Cup participants Curacao in their Group E opener in Texas, with Julian Nagelsmann’s side installed as heavy favourites to claim a comfortable victory in what is a historic occasion for the Caribbean nation.
Curacao — nicknamed the Blue Wave — earned their place at the tournament by beating Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda in qualifying, marking a remarkable milestone for a country that only became fully independent in 2010, four years before Germany lifted the trophy in Brazil.
Nagelsmann has a formidable core to call upon. Manuel Neuer brings veteran experience in goal, Joshua Kimmich captains the side with his characteristic versatility, and Florian Wirtz — one of the most expensive players in world football — provides the creative spark in attack. On paper, the gulf in class is significant.
Yet Germany arrive carrying the familiar weight of expectation that has tripped them up before. Their record in major tournaments is storied, but recent editions have delivered disappointment rather than silverware, and that pressure does not discriminate between experienced campaigners and newcomers. Wirtz and Aleksandar Pavlovic, for all their club-level quality, are stepping onto the World Cup stage for the first time — just like every Curacao player in the squad.
Curacao are not without attacking threat. Sontje Hansen and Tahith Chong, both familiar to English football fans from their time in the Championship, give the Blue Wave genuine pace and directness in the final third. If they can channel the energy of their historic debut into an early goal, Germany’s composure could be tested.
The smart money, however, is on Germany’s depth of talent and tactical organisation to assert themselves once any early nerves settle. A fast Curacao start is plausible, but sustaining pressure against a side of Germany’s calibre for 90 minutes is a different proposition entirely.
Predicted score: Germany 3-1 Curacao
