Germany launch their World Cup 2026 campaign against first-time participants Curacao in Group E in Texas, with Julian Nagelsmann’s side chasing a record-equalling fifth world title. Curacao, known as the Blue Wave, face a baptism of fire in a group that also includes Ecuador and Ivory Coast.
Nagelsmann’s Germany are the clear favourites heading into the fixture, having won the World Cup in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014. A fifth triumph would draw them level with Brazil as the most successful nation in the tournament’s history.
For Curacao, the match represents their first ever World Cup appearance, and the Caribbean nation will be eager to make an impression despite the scale of the challenge. Among their most recognisable names is Tahith Chong, the winger who spent time at Manchester United — a connection that studio pundit Juan Mata will be well placed to reflect on, having been Chong’s team-mate at Old Trafford.
Mata joins Emma Hayes and Ian Wright in the studio for UK coverage. Hayes brings a dual perspective as a former Chelsea Women manager and current United States women’s national team head coach, a role that has given her an intimate understanding of American football culture. Wright, a former England international, rounds out a panel with considerable playing and coaching pedigree.
Presenting duties fall to Mark Pougatch, who will be joined by Adam Richman — best known for the food travel series Man v. Food — to offer a cultural backdrop to proceedings from a temporary studio set against New York’s skyline.
Seb Hutchinson takes the commentary microphone, with former Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Luton Town winger Andros Townsend alongside him as co-commentator. Townsend earned 13 caps for England during his playing career.
The match kicks off at 6pm BST, opening what promises to be a busy evening of World Cup football.
