Genesio makes Aubameyang his absolute priority to build new-look OM
Newly appointed Marseille manager Bruno Genesio wants to keep Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang despite his gross monthly salary of €350,000, which the OM board considers too high.
Bruno Genesio has identified Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as his first choice to retain for next season at Olympique de Marseille, according to La Provence. The new Marseille manager is banking on the experience and effectiveness of the 37-year-old Gabonese striker, despite the financial constraints imposed by the club’s management.
The matter is far from straightforward, however. Aubameyang earns approximately €350,000 gross per month, a salary level that exceeds what OM’s new wage bill policy intends to accept. The board, led by president Stéphane Richard, has not yet decided, and a sufficiently attractive outside offer could change things.
On the pitch, the striker delivered solid arguments during the past season: 14 goals and 10 assists across all competitions, figures that testify to rare longevity at his age. Under contract until June 2027 with the Phocaean club, he is not in a weak negotiating position.
Genesio, who must build a competitive squad with limited resources, sees in Aubameyang a valuable reference point in a dressing room undergoing full reconstruction. The question of his retention will be one of the first tests of the manager’s influence on OM’s sporting decisions this summer.
