England's 3-2 win over Mexico draws 9.1 million viewers despite 2am kick-off
England's last-16 victory over Mexico at the 2026 World Cup pulled a peak live audience of 9.1 million on BBC One despite a 2am UK start, more than tripling the broadcaster's previous record for programming aired between 2am and 4am.
England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup last 16 drew a peak live audience of 9.1 million on BBC One, the BBC has announced, despite a 2am kick-off that was pushed back a further hour by thunderstorms in Mexico City.
The average audience across the match was 7.8 million — more than triple the previous BBC record for any programme screened between 2am and 4am, a benchmark set during the 2016 Rio Olympics. The broadcast also commanded an 86 per cent share of all viewers watching television at that hour, a figure that prompted widespread amusement among England supporters.
Fans quickly turned their attention to the remaining 14 per cent. “What were the 14 per cent watching?” asked one. Another added: “Who the heck was watching anything else at that time? Surely it must have been left on TVs by mistake. I watched the match — well worth staying up.” A fifth fan put it plainly: “It’s 2am, England are on and 14 per cent of the people awake and with a TV on found something else to watch!”
For context, the alternative terrestrial options at the time included a Teddy Pendergrass biopic on BBC Two, a Graham Norton interview with Madonna, Shop on TV on ITV1, a Gogglebox repeat on Channel 4, and Build Your Dream Home in the Country on Channel 5.
The appetite for the match extended well beyond the live broadcast. A rerun on BBC Two at 7am on Monday drew a peak of 1.1 million viewers, averaging 900,000.
Perhaps the most viral moment came after the final whistle, when Harry Kane joined his team-mates in singing Wonderwall with England fans — his voice audibly cracking throughout a post-match interview with Kelly Somers. The BBC said footage of that exchange was viewed 65 million times.
England’s quarter-final against Norway, who eliminated Brazil, is scheduled for a 10pm UK kick-off on Saturday.
