Gaziev floors Nzechukwu in 80 seconds as hands-down gamble backfires at UFC Sacramento
Shamil Gaziev needed just 80 seconds to knock out Kennedy Nzechukwu at UFC Sacramento on Saturday, landing a straight right after Nzechukwu's hands-down defensive gamble left his chin completely exposed.
Shamil Gaziev recorded his third UFC knockout in brutal fashion at UFC Sacramento, dropping Kennedy Nzechukwu with a single straight right hand 80 seconds into their heavyweight bout. Nzechukwu’s decision to fight with his hands lowered — apparently banking on speed and footwork to compensate — proved catastrophic against one of the division’s hardest hitters.
From the opening bell, Nzechukwu, a former light heavyweight making his way up in weight, looked to use his agility to stay out of range of Gaziev’s heavy hands. The plan showed early cracks when Gaziev cut off the cage and nearly landed a big right hand on the first attempt. The follow-up connected flush on the chin, sending Nzechukwu crashing to the mat and prompting an immediate stoppage.
The finish improved Gaziev’s overall record to 15-3 and moved him to 4-3 inside the UFC. His three promotional victories have all come by knockout, underlining the kind of one-punch danger that makes him a threat to anyone in the heavyweight division.
For Nzechukwu, the loss drops him to 14-7-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the UFC’s heavyweight ranks. It was a familiar ending: four of his six UFC defeats have now come by knockout or submission, and the hands-down experiment will do little to silence questions about his durability at the highest level.
