Ian Garry’s debut UFC title challenge ended in a unanimous-decision defeat to Islam Makhachev in the welterweight main event at UFC 330 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, with all three judges scoring the fight for the champion.

Speaking to Joe Rogan in his post-fight interview, Garry was candid and composed in equal measure. He offered genuine praise for Makhachev’s achievement in moving up from lightweight to claim a second belt, while also standing by his own assessment of the contest.

“Nothing surprised me. I have nothing but respect for Islam,” Garry said. “We should all sit back, show him respect, to come up here and win that second belt. I believed in my heart and in my soul, I was better than him tonight. He won. I have no complaints, no excuses.”

Garry did not dispute the judges’ scorecards and stopped well short of suggesting the result was unjust. The admission that he felt he performed better sits alongside a clear-eyed acceptance of the outcome — a combination that will likely define how the defeat is remembered as much as the scorecards themselves.

At 28, Garry was keen to frame the loss as a chapter rather than a conclusion. He pointed to the quality of his preparation as a foundation to build on, crediting his corner and his family for their role in getting him to the biggest fight of his career.

“This is the best camp of my life; I’m proud of my team,” Garry added. “I’m proud of my family. I love my wife, my little boy. I fight to make them happy.”

Makhachev’s victory cements his status as a two-division champion and underlines his credentials as one of the sport’s pound-for-pound elite. For Garry, the defeat is a first real setback at the highest level — but one he appears determined to use as motivation rather than carry as a burden.
