Gabriel set for Man Utd pre-season bow at 15 after scoring 21 goals for Under-18s
JJ Gabriel, who scored 21 goals in 23 Under-18 appearances last season, is set to feature in Manchester United's pre-season tour of Europe and is now eligible to play in the Premier League after turning 15.
JJ Gabriel is in line to make his senior Manchester United appearance this pre-season after the club confirmed a five-country European tour for the 2026-27 campaign, with the 15-year-old academy forward now old enough to feature in the Premier League.
Gabriel caught the eye throughout last season with United’s Under-18 side, netting 21 goals in 23 appearances. At 14 for much of that campaign, Premier League eligibility rules prevented him from being named in a first-team matchday squad. Those restrictions no longer apply, opening the door to what could be one of the youngest Premier League debuts in the competition’s history.
United’s pre-season schedule begins with a friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18, followed by a trip to Trondheim, Norway to face Rosenborg the following Friday. The tour then moves to Sweden, where United take on Atletico Madrid in the Snapdragon Cup in Stockholm on August 1 before facing European champions Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on August 8. A fixture against Leeds in Dublin on August 12 precedes the tour finale — a high-profile friendly against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland on August 15, a week before the Premier League season kicks off.
Gabriel is expected to feature in the earlier friendlies at minimum, with the door open to more appearances should he impress. First-team manager Michael Carrick had already seen enough last season to invite the teenager to train with the senior group.
“JJ’s doing really well,” Carrick said in March. “He’s trained well and it is good to have young players up. JJ is a big talent, it is pretty obvious and he has had a good season for the U18s. We think an awful lot of him. But patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and developing him and picking the right moment to step up.”
With several United players still returning from World Cup duty, the pre-season tour offers Gabriel a genuine window to make an impression on the first-team staff. Director of football Jason Wilcox described the schedule as providing “strong preparation for the 2026-27 season and a valuable opportunity to connect with our incredible fans across Europe.”
