Dani Ceballos is available on a free transfer after Real Madrid confirmed the 29-year-old has no future at the Santiago Bernabéu, opening the door for Manchester United to pursue the Spain international as they reshape their midfield ahead of the 2026-27 Premier League season.

Reports indicate a “new chapter” is set to begin for Ceballos, who made 215 appearances for Madrid across his time at the club and collected 15 major trophies, including three Champions League titles. United manager Michael Carrick has identified midfield reinforcement as the priority this summer, with Casemiro having departed Old Trafford at the end of his contract and both Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount linked with exits.

Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo are expected to form the spine of Carrick’s midfield, but the depth behind them needs addressing. United have been linked with a string of more expensive options — Sandro Tonali would cost at least £80m, while Aurélien Tchouaméni’s asking price has climbed to £87m — making Ceballos’s free-agent status a financially attractive alternative.

The former Arsenal loanee earned approximately £85,000 a week at Madrid, a figure that compares favourably with the £350,000-a-week Casemiro commanded during his time at Old Trafford. Removing that salary from the wage bill gives United more flexibility, and the club have indicated they do not intend to hand out a contract of similar size in the near future.

Should United secure Ceballos without a transfer fee, the saving could be redirected toward other targets. Mateus Fernandes, valued at around £60m by West Ham, is understood to be on United’s wishlist, with the player reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford. Croatia international Martin Baturina is another playmaker Carrick is monitoring, though Aston Villa are also said to be interested in the World Cup performer.

Ederson is already set to join United following the conclusion of the World Cup, adding another piece to Carrick’s midfield rebuild. Whether Ceballos ultimately fits the profile the manager is seeking remains to be seen, but his availability at no cost and his proven pedigree at the highest level make him a credible option as the club balances ambition with financial discipline.
