Free agent Ceballos emerges as affordable midfield option for Man United this summer
Real Madrid's Dani Ceballos is available on a free transfer and has been identified as a cost-effective midfield reinforcement for Manchester United, who face potential bills of up to £87m for other targets on their list.
Dani Ceballos has emerged as a free-transfer option for Manchester United this summer after the 29-year-old’s departure from Real Madrid, with manager Michael Carrick understood to be prioritising midfield reinforcements ahead of the new season.
Ceballos, a three-time Champions League winner who made 215 appearances for Madrid and collected 15 major honours at the club, is no longer part of the squad’s plans at the Santiago Bernabéu. Reports indicate the Spanish midfielder is ready to begin a “new chapter” following the end of his contract.
United’s midfield is set for significant reshaping. Casemiro has already left Old Trafford after his contract expired, while Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount have both been linked with exits. Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo are expected to form the core of Carrick’s central midfield, with Ederson also set to arrive once the World Cup concludes.
The appeal of Ceballos lies largely in his price point. United have been connected with a string of expensive alternatives — Sandro Tonali would cost at least £80m, while Aurélien Tchouaméni’s valuation has risen to approximately £87m. By contrast, Ceballos would arrive on a free and earned around £85,000 a week at Madrid — the same figure Diogo Dalot currently takes home at Old Trafford.
That represents a dramatic contrast to the wage structure United are moving away from. Casemiro collected £350,000 a week during his time at the club, a salary the club has no intention of replicating in the near future.
Should United move for Ceballos, the saving on his transfer fee could be redirected toward other targets. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, valued at around £60m, is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford, while Croatia international Martin Baturina — who impressed at the World Cup — is another playmaker Carrick is monitoring, though Aston Villa are also reported to be interested.
