France vs Spain on July 14: 5,000 police officers deployed for 2026 World Cup semi-final
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced on Sunday the deployment of approximately 5,000 police officers and gendarmes in Paris for the World Cup semi-final between France and Spain, scheduled for July 14 at 9 p.m., on France's national holiday.
Approximately 5,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed in Paris on July 14 to oversee both the military parade on the Champs-Élysées and the 2026 World Cup semi-final between France and Spain, scheduled for 9 p.m. that same evening. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez detailed this security plan on Sunday, warning that there would be “no tolerance for disorder”.
The schedule has placed this prestigious fixture at the heart of an already busy day for law enforcement. Officers will be mobilized from before 10 a.m. for the traditional parade, before shifting to a public order operation for the evening football match, which is expected to be followed throughout France.
Laurent Nuñez also drew lessons from the quarter-final won by the Blues against Morocco (2-0), which he judged “overall rather very, very well handled” from a security standpoint. He nevertheless reported 89 arrests and lamented “the death of a seventeen-year-old girl following a terrible accident” that occurred during that evening.
The coincidence of the match with the national holiday represents an unprecedented logistical challenge for the authorities, forced to simultaneously manage July 14 festivities and celebrations — or potential disorder — linked to a World Cup knockout match.
