Alexander-Arnold's half-time message to Gordon unlocks Czech Republic on England return

Trent Alexander-Arnold marked his return to the England starting lineup with a decisive assist in a 2-0 Nations League victory over the Czech Republic in Prague, his first appearance for the national side in almost two years and his debut under manager Thomas Tuchel.

With the Czech Republic reduced to 10 men, Tuchel’s side had struggled to break down a disciplined defensive shape in the first half. But within minutes of the restart, Alexander-Arnold bent a precise ball to the back post for Anthony Gordon to steer home — a move the Real Madrid right-back said was the direct result of a conversation at the interval.

“I spoke to Ant at half time and said, ‘if I’m getting in those half spaces and looking to put it in, make sure you get to the back post’,” Alexander-Arnold explained. “Of course, you don’t expect it to happen that quickly, but it did, and it worked. He’s a willing runner, it’s great to play with him. I was able to execute the pass.”

Harry Kane added a second to seal the win and ease some of the pressure on England heading into the remainder of the Nations League campaign.

For Alexander-Arnold, the night carried personal significance beyond the result. “It’s always an honour and pleasure to represent your country. It’s been a long time but I’ve always believed that I can play for England. That belief has always been there, it’s just about proving it at club level. The manager gave me the chance tonight to go out there and play, and I tried to follow what he asked of me to the best of my ability.”

Lewis Hall also made his first start in a reshuffled backline after an injury to Nico O’Reilly, with the Newcastle left-back combining effectively with Gordon down the left flank. Gordon, on loan at Barcelona from Newcastle, scored his third goal in as many England appearances.

The winger was candid about the thrill of finally linking up with Alexander-Arnold at international level. “I make that run time and time again and only a certain number of players have that ability, technique and bravery to be willing to make the mistake trying that pass. That’s why he’s so good and I’ve been dying to play with him for that reason.”

Gordon also acknowledged the wider context of Alexander-Arnold’s England journey. “He’s had his own journey with England. He would’ve liked to have played more than he has but he’s been a great character during this camp.”

England face Croatia next in their Nations League campaign.
