Gordon and Kane break Czech Republic's resistance with ten men, England climbs
Reduced to ten men from the 25th minute after Sulc's red card, the Czechs conceded two second-half goals to England (0-2). Gordon and Kane scored the goals, allowing the Three Lions to climb to second place in Group 3.
England dominated Czech Republic 2-0 on Tuesday evening in the second matchday of the Nations League, capitalizing on Pavel Sulc’s early dismissal to make the difference in the second half. Gordon and Kane scored the two English goals.
The first twenty minutes had shown relative balance, despite dominant English possession. Everything changed in the 25th minute when Sulc stamped on Anthony Gordon’s ankle, leaving the Czechs with ten men for the rest of the match. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the hosts held firm until halftime.
The second half proved fatal. From the 47th minute, Trent Alexander-Arnold provided Gordon with a decisive pass, and the winger finished with a perfect diving header to open the scoring. A precious goal too for Kane, still silent since his arrival at FC Barcelona, who found the net for his country to reassure himself.
Harry Kane then increased the lead in the 69th minute, sealing the score at 0-2. Late in the match, the Czechs attempted to reduce the deficit but never managed to do so.
In the standings, the double defeat leaves Czech Republic in last place in Group 3 without a single point. England, meanwhile, records its first victory in this Nations League phase and overtakes Croatia on goal difference to sit in second place, three points behind Spain, who had beaten the Three Lions a few days earlier (3-2).
England’s next fixture will be a trip to Croatia on October 3, a direct duel for second place in the group.
