Tim Ream retires from USMNT after 86 caps and four World Cup appearances as captain

Tim Ream confirmed his retirement from the United States men’s national team on Tuesday, ending a 16-year international career that included 86 caps and the captain’s armband for 26 matches — four of them at the World Cup.

The 38-year-old Charlotte FC defender made the announcement ahead of a friendly against Chile in his hometown, clarifying a situation that had previously been described with softer language. “It is retirement. We’ve used the word recognition. We weren’t really sure how we wanted to label it, but, yeah, that’s it for me,” Ream said. “I’m proud of being a part of something for 16 years, but it is time to step away and stay away from play with the national team.”

Ream had earlier told head coach Mauricio Pochettino he would not retire from international football, but says the evolution of both the team and the game ultimately changed his thinking. Only DaMarcus Beasley has accumulated more caps than Ream’s 60 appearances after the age of 30, underlining his longevity at the highest level of the American game.

His debut came on 17 November 2010 in a friendly against South Africa, and over the years that followed he became one of the most reliable figures in the USMNT backline.

Ream was reflective about what the captaincy meant to him and how he tried to use it. “The biggest thing that I wanted to do as I started to get the captain’s armband more and more is, ‘How can I help these guys become the next captain? How can I help this group continue to develop and be more special than they are,’” he said.

Looking ahead, Ream expressed confidence in the next generation of American talent. He drew a parallel between the current crop of young players — singling out 17-year-old Cavan Sullivan — and the emergence of Gio Reyna, Tyler Adams, and Weston McKennie. “They have a ridiculous amount of confidence, and it’s refreshing. It borderlines being cocky, but I think you have to have that little bit of swagger,” Ream said. “They’re still learning.”

Ream confirmed he will continue playing for Charlotte FC in MLS and has not yet decided on his longer-term club future.
