France’s World Cup 2026 Group I match against Iraq in Philadelphia resumed at 1:00am UK time (8:00pm local) on Wednesday after a weather-enforced stoppage of two hours and 15 minutes halted proceedings at half-time at Lincoln Financial Field.

France led 1-0 when play was suspended, Kylian Mbappé having driven a powerful left-footed effort into the net for his 15th World Cup goal — leaving him three behind Lionel Messi, who claimed sole ownership of the all-time World Cup scoring record earlier in the tournament with a goal against Austria.

The delay was triggered by storms in the Philadelphia area. Weather safety protocols at open-air World Cup venues in the United States require both the pitch and stands to be vacated when lightning is detected within approximately 10 miles. The minimum stoppage under those rules is 30 minutes, followed by a 15-minute lightning-free window and a further 15 minutes for players to warm up and for water to be cleared from the surface. Any new lightning strike within the area resets the clock.

Lincoln Financial Field, which has no roof, is particularly exposed to such conditions, and weather disruptions of this kind had been anticipated at the tournament. Major League Soccer regularly deals with unplanned stoppages on the same safety grounds.

With the match restarting at 1:00am UK time, officials confirmed that the second-half hydration break would be skipped, making France vs Iraq the first World Cup 2026 fixture to go without a hydration break in both halves.

A similar weather threat had loomed over the group’s other simultaneous fixture, Norway vs Senegal, which also kicked off at 1:00am UK time.

France vs Iraq was also subject to a weather warning before kick-off, meaning the disruption had been a possibility throughout the evening.
