Former United star urges club to sign free-agent Lewandowski as Sesko's mentor
Robert Lewandowski is available on a free transfer after Barcelona allowed his contract to expire, and ex-Manchester United forward Giuseppe Rossi has called a move to Old Trafford a 'no-brainer', citing the 37-year-old's value to young striker Benjamin Sesko.
Robert Lewandowski is without a club after Barcelona declined to renew his contract, and former Manchester United forward Giuseppe Rossi has publicly urged the Red Devils to sign the 37-year-old Polish striker on a short-term deal.
Lewandowski departs the Nou Camp having scored 120 goals across four seasons in Spain. Despite his age, he has remained a consistent scorer, and Rossi believes his experience would be invaluable inside a United dressing room that has been rebuilt around younger attacking talent.
“Robert Lewandowski to Man Utd? Yeah, why not?” Rossi told Ozoon. “Of course, Lewandowski would be an incredible asset for the young players, providing his experience and big-game knowledge. With Benjamin Sesko being a young, growing player, having someone like Lewandowski on the team would only benefit him. It’s a no-brainer. He has a huge resume and on a short-term deal, it’s a win-win.”
United invested heavily in their attack last summer, bringing in Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha — a trio that combined for 34 goals as the club secured a return to the Champions League. However, Rasmus Hojlund has since joined Napoli on a permanent deal following his loan spell in Italy, leaving the squad thinner up front.
Manager Michael Carrick’s primary focus this window is reinforcing midfield, with United close to finalising a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson. The club are also monitoring further options in the middle of the park, but Lewandowski’s free-agent status could make him an attractive low-cost addition to the attacking department.
United have previous for recruiting elite veteran strikers on free transfers. Edinson Cavani arrived from PSG in 2020 and scored 17 goals in his debut season at Old Trafford, offering a template for how an experienced forward can complement a squad in transition.
Lewandowski, who has also played for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, would arrive with one of the most decorated CVs in European football. Whether United act on Rossi’s recommendation will likely depend on how their midfield business develops over the coming weeks.
