Former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe spared jail after assaulting ex-girlfriend in south London

Former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe has been spared a custodial sentence after a court found him guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, pulling a braid from her head during an argument outside her south London home. Croydon Magistrates’ Court sentenced the 30-year-old on Friday to a 12-month community order, 80 hours of unpaid work, and 27 days of rehabilitation activity, along with a £764 fine covering court costs and a victim surcharge.

The incident occurred on 14 December 2024 outside the Lambeth home of Amie Mayson, when the pair argued over money she claimed Ibe owed her. Prosecutors told the court that after Mayson threw muffins on the floor and called Ibe a “druggy”, he grabbed her by the hair, leaving her with a bald patch after pulling out a braid. Ibe had initially denied the charge in March before pleading guilty in July.

Representing himself at the hearing in a black coat and trousers, Ibe addressed the court directly. “I made a serious mistake,” he said. “I understand it is wrong. I am genuinely remorseful. I’ve had to look at myself in the mirror. I cannot change what I did but will take responsibility for what I do next.”

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mayson described the assault’s lasting effect on her confidence, self-esteem and mental health. Despite expressing “feelings of fear”, she said she felt “compassion” for Ibe and that forgiveness had been part of her “healing journey”.

Ibe made 58 appearances for Liverpool and had subsequent spells at Derby County and Birmingham City in the Championship before joining AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. The former England under-21 international had been playing non-league football in recent years prior to signing for Lokomotiv Sofia in the Bulgarian First League in 2025.
