Gasperini warns United as Carrick's future hangs on Roma and Villa results
Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has backed his side's firepower ahead of Tuesday's Champions League visit to Old Trafford, with United winless in nine games and Michael Carrick's position under growing scrutiny.
Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has issued a confident warning to Manchester United ahead of their Champions League meeting at Old Trafford on Tuesday, declaring that his side’s goalscoring depth makes them a serious threat — as pressure mounts on United head coach Michael Carrick following a nine-game winless run.
Gasperini pointed to Roma’s remarkable early-season form in Serie A, where they have yet to lose in the Italian top flight and have scored 28 goals across their opening 10 league matches, as evidence of a team brimming with belief.
“Sometimes the numbers do tell you the story,” Gasperini told reporters. “Besides scoring lots of goals, we’re also scoring with many different players. That shows how much confidence there is in the team: lots of players believe they can make a decisive contribution, be it with an assist or a goal. We’re scoring more goals with more players and that’s a great sign.”
United arrive at the fixture in troubled form. Back-to-back Champions League defeats to Como and Atletico Madrid have followed their only win in the competition — a September victory over Sabah — and a loss to Chelsea at the weekend extended Carrick’s winless streak across all competitions to nine matches. That run has left United 17th in the Premier League table, outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.
Reports at the weekend suggested the club is minded to wait until the upcoming international break before making a final decision on Carrick’s future. Tuesday’s clash with Roma and a subsequent Premier League fixture against Aston Villa are therefore likely to prove decisive in shaping that verdict.
For Carrick, the visit of a Roma side in confident form and firing on multiple attacking cylinders represents one of the sternest tests of his tenure at a moment when he can least afford another setback.
